The Coastal Boating Competence Course starts Monday May 2 at 7:30pm at Noroton Yacht Club, 23 Baywater Drive, Darien, CT 06820.

To request information or to register, click right here. There is no charge for registration - you may pay by cash or check at the first class. Pre-registration will save time, however, and allow your course materials to be kept available for your use.

The course will meet for six classroom meetings on consecutive Monday and Thursday evenings, plus an exam evening, Monday, May 23, at the conclusion of the course.

Graduation from this course will satisfy requirements for the State's Safe Boating Certificate - which is required for the operation of all Connecticut registered boats. This course will also entitle you to the new "Coastal Boating Endorsement" on your Connecticut Safe Boating Certificate.

This "Course" is more comprehensive than the typical minimum-standard Boating "Class" that is required for the CT Certificate. This "Course" includes the minimum topics on safety and regulations, but also includes:
 - an introduction to charts
 - the compass
 - aids to navigation
 - basic piloting
 - marine radio
 - anchoring
 - knots
 - boat handling and seamanship
 - equipment and regulations
 - navigation rules
- finding your position and basic coastal piloting
(i.e. how to get there and get BACK!)
 - and information on the local harbors and pleasant destinations for the weekend boater in our part of Long Island Sound.

To register for the course, click right here.

The course is directed at general, practical, issues of interest to all boaters, and is not targeted to either power or sail. Students receive their own chart of the local harbors and Western Long Island Sound. This chart is used in class and in hands-on exercises, along with the text and plotting equipment.

Please let any family members, friends, or neighbors who might be interested, know about this course!

If you have questions about the course, just send an e-mail to and we will get back to you within 24 hours with an answer to your question.

Best regards to you, from the Darien Sail & Power Squadron
For students who have registered in the course:

In 2013, the State of Connecticut introduced a new method for obtaining the CT Safe Boating Certificate.  Under the new system, the State will no longer issue the wallet-sized plastic card that looks like a drivers license.   Now, students who pass the course will be able to print their own copy of their certificate (and pay the state the same fee, $50).  This procedure uses the same system as now in effect for hunting and fishing licenses.

The first step in this process if for students to obtain their FREE "Conservation ID number" - and let the course instructor know what it is.   This FREE process begins by going to this web address
OR  just click on this link -
SET UP CONSERVATION ID#   (its the same thing)
and you will be directed to the State's site for
"Online Sportsmen Licensing."

Note that you will need to do this so that you can receive your CT Boating Certificate just after you graduate from this course.

WHEN YOU RECEIVE YOUR "CONSERVATION ID #" - please send it to the Boating Course Administrator - at    so that it may be kept on file - ready for your graduation ..... thanks.
